After seeing this photo
of my stairwell,
ever wonder,
"Who Are They?"
to all the pictures on the walls?
I am going to break it down for you! Some are family and some are not...Let's start with this numbered picture so you can follow along,
1) This antique oval picture is my Maternal Grandmother, Dorothy Rose Nigg Heimerman at age 5 with her brother Dennis, age 1 1/2. This would have been taken in 1922. My Grandma passed away in 2011 and she gave this to me several years before her passing.
Above is a closer shot. The photo above the oval one is the wedding picture of my Maternal Grandma, Dorothy Rose Nigg and my Grandpa, Alfred Joseph Heimerman, on their wedding day in 1936. (see below)
2) This tiny antique picture above, is of my husbands Maternal Great Great-Grandmother. Sorry that it didn't scan well, but I didn't take it out of the frame. What is unusual about this picture is that her hair is down and full of curls. Women usually wore their hair up.
3) This little girl was found at an antique store. She would be considered an instant ancestor! My hubby doesn't like her because her eyes look crossed but I find that endearing! Refer to numbered picture above to see her.
4) This family group is my hubby's Paternal Great Great-Grandparents Robert and Anna Moore, and their six children. The boy at the top left is my hubby's Great Grandfather, Ben Moore.
5) This is a sweet picture of two little girls who are sisters. The youngest one married the boy above and became my hubby's Great Grandmother, Hazel Alderson Moore. The picture must have gotten moisture between the glass and photo. A lot of it stuck to the glass so I will have to get another copy of this picture from his Grandmother.
6) This picture above, is of my Maternal Grandpa's parents, Michael Heimerman and Catherine Bugner on their wedding day. Catherine had many children, including twins, however she died just two short months after giving birth to my Grandfather, Alfred. I don't think he ever got over not having the love of his mother to raise him.
7) This large picture was found at an antique store in Springfield, IL. I was taken by her because she must have come from a very wealthy family based on how she was dressed and she had a ring and a necklace on, plus the picture was put in the elaborate frame. I had to have an arch mat cut because the corner of the huge picture was torn off. I have named her Elizabeth and she is an instant ancestor.
8) These twins were found in a Kansas antique store and I became interested in them simply for the fact that one rarely sees a picture of twins from back in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. The glass caused shadows on the picture.
9) This string of four pictures are my Maternal Grandparents and Great-Grandparents on their wedding day.
I found it interesting that most of them had on dark colored wedding dresses.
Above is Christine Weber and Frank Joseph Doll on their wedding day in Germany. These are my Maternal Grandmother's Grandparents. Below is their daughter, my Great-Grandma, Rosa Doll Nigg.
Above is my Maternal Great Grandparents. Rosa Doll Nigg and Henry Madard Nigg on their wedding day. Close to six months after their 5th child was born, Henry died and Great Grandma never remarried. I remember hearing her say, "I have my children, so I don't need another man!" And she took care of herself and the kids the rest of her life. First on the farm in Kansas by bootlegging whiskey from the crops she raised, then years later, she became a school cook. The picture below is of Rosa on her wedding day. Notice, it looks like she had on a white gown, but they colorized it and she really only had a white collar, but a black dress.
The last of the four pictures is a close up of my Maternal Grandparents, Alfred and Dorothy Heimerman. Dorothy is the daughter of Rosa and Henry above. They had my mom, their only living child.
Interestingly about this picture, my Grandma Dolly, known by her friends, was short, 5ft tall, like me but Grandpa Al was tall so they placed her on a brick to make her look taller and she is still so much shorter than he. Also she had a black eye that she got from playing ball with her brother and it had to be covered with make-up for her wedding.
But wait there is more...
I acquired these sweet pictures and found them to be unusual in their poses. The top one is of two sisters and the bottom one is of one of the sisters, all grown up, with her baby. I have a whole box of their life from scrapbooks, to where they lived and other memorabilia. It amazes me that this is not with the family but auctioned off. I guess many people either don't want family history photos or the family just dies out.
