I came across this hutch at a local thrift store. When I first saw it, I thought it was an old 1970's piece because it was so dark. Upon closer viewing, seeing the vintage drawer pulls and the dove-tailing on the drawers, I realized that it was an antique. I found two labels, one in the drawer and a metal one on the back that reads, "Lenox Shops Furniture, Canastota, NY". I Googled this information and they were in business selling only high end furniture from 1893 - 1930.
I first shared this with you in a recent Diamonds In The Rough! post.
I realized that it was a shame to paint solid mahogany, but a painted hutch was the look I wanted, not the dark look that it was. The real shame was that I planned on using it for a display rack in my mall booth and not in my home.
However, last weekend when hubby was helping me set up the shutters in my booth and getting the hutch put together after I had painted it right in my empty booth for the past two days, said, "Boy, this hutch sure is nice and would look better in our home." I knew it would eventually make it there but we no longer had our pickup and couldn't haul it home. The thrift store had taken it to the mall for me since it was right around the corner.
I guess he had been thinking about the hutch because when we got home he said, "Call someone with a pickup and take the Seller's cabinet to your booth and bring the hutch home." So I called around and no one was very interested even for lots of $$. So I called the only person that I can really count on (Other than my wonderful Hubby) when I am in a pickle...My young and cute, handy dandy handyman. He said, "Sure!" So we did the switch, he and I. I also fed him lunch and paid him. It sure did come out beautiful after using my Annie Sloan chalk paint and wax! Looks totally different don't you think?
And a nice change in my dining room.
Here's the hutch before I decorated it. I painted the base with Annie Sloan's Old White and the upper crown molding on the top. The hutch shelving I painted in Old Ocher. The design on the drawer fronts was there originally, so I just taped off that area and painted it Old White. After it dried, I retaped the opposite and painted that the Old Ocher.
I brought down my ironstone pitcher collection from the upstairs landing and placed it in the hutch.
This will be something that I will change continually with the seasons and my mood. I am excited to have this much variety for decorating.
The beautiful curvy profile. I'm giddy with excitement! I LOVE change! Change is good.

This is what the dining room wall looked like earlier today. This Seller's cupboard is now in my mall booth ready for someone to snatch it up and take it home. |
