Holly Jolly Tutorial

I finally did IT! I made a stencil with freezer paper. I had seen this on blogland and wanted to try it. My excuse...Hubby was out of town and I wanted to do a fast, fun and easy project.

Here are the steps to making a stencil.

ONE: Find a graphic that you like. You will have to cut out all the design, so choose carefully.

I chose this from Google Images by doing a search for Christmas letter art.

TWO: Cut a sheet of freezer paper to fit in your printer. Mine was 8 1/2 x 11. Print on the dull side since the shinny side will be ironed to your fabric. After printing out your artwork. Place on a cutting mat and using an xacto kinfe, cut out all the design. This takes a little while and a bit of patience.

THREE: Iron shinny side down onto material. Don't use steam and this will only take a few seconds. Make sure that if you have any O's like I did to keep your centers of the O's and iron them in place too.

Oops, almost forgot to put in the center of the O's!
FOUR: Mix Textile Medium and Acrylic paint of your choice to make the paint a fabric paint. Textile medium can be purchased right next to the acrylic paints at your local Walmart or craft store. Then using a stencil brush, pounce your paint into the cutout areas just like any stenciling calls for. Make sure that you use plastic under your stenciling in case your paint bleeds through to the back.

FIVE: After the paint is dry, simply peel off the freezer paper. It should come off really easily.

SIX: Make whatever you want out of this stenciling project. For me, I made a cute Christmas pillow. Sorry, I won't be showing you a tutorial of how I made my pillow, but here it is.

I added some black and white check piping since I think it goes with anything! And cute red buttons on the corners. Brush fringe on the outside with scrap fabric that I had on hand.

The back fabric is scrap as well. It's a soft fuzzy polka dot.

That's it folks. Just thought you would like to know how easy it is to use freezer paper as a stencil on material. The ideas are endless. So, Imagine a monogram on fabric then framed. Or a draw-string bag with a sweet design. If you don't sew there is always ready made pillows that this would work on! And how about a fabric covered bulletin board with a design using this technique? Come on, Christmas is coming and these would make great personalized gifts!!!
